Would you rather be you or someone else? - Librarian Book Rec

Hi friends - I recently read a young adult book I’d like to share. It’s called I am Not Jessica Chen by Ann Liang. It was published at the beginning of this year, so you may not have heard of it yet.

The story follows high school senior, Jenna Chen, as she tries to keep up with the expectations of being the ideal student. She does well in school and excels in art, but she still feels inadequate compared other students and her “perfect” cousin Jessica.

When Jessica gets into Harvard (and Jenna doesn’t), she can’t take it anymore! Jenna wishes she were Jessica and is SHOCKED when she actually wakes up in Jessica’s body. I highly recommend reading to find out what happens next.

This book reminded me of our hard-working juniors and seniors. The pressure to get the best grades, make the most friends, join the most clubs, earn the most community service hours, and get into the best colleges (and all at once) can feel overwhelming. Because it is. That pressure can feel even worse when you compare yourself to your friends, other students, or the expectations of your parents.

High school isn’t easy, but I’m here to remind you that you’re doing a great job. Strive for your best, not perfection, because what does “perfect” even mean anyway?

Overall, this book was relatable and also features a sweet romance. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Have a great weekend!
